What is this horror novel from the late 80's? maybe very early 90's?

i read the book when i was about 16, so i dont really remember it.i think the author's first name might have been alan. only wrote 2 books. both had short names. all i do remember is that the bad guy is one of the centurions that crucified jesus and some of jesus's blood got into his eyes so he's become immortal but is constantly wiping bloody tears from his face. him and the good guy are both looking for a petrified piece of the original cross. it was a weird book and my teenage brain couldnt quite get a handle on it so i wanted to try reading it again as an adult, but i cant remember what it was. help me out ya'll!
