Why do indian hindus worship parents?

Not that parents in general should not be respected but why is status given out when it is not earned? Does a normal person think that a parent can dole out blessings like a god?it just seems like India obsession with status makes it a dysfunctional place and its people egotistical. Small guy mentality is an epidemic...like a napoleon syndrome.
